Just days after the guilty verdict in Donald Trump’s New York business records trial, First Son Hunter Biden is heading to court for a criminal trial of his own.
Biden was indicted by a federal grand jury in September on three felony gun counts after his sweetheart plea deal related to misdemeanor tax charges spectacularly fell apart last summer. That deal would have allowed him to plead not guilty to two federal tax misdemeanor charges and also enter a “diversion agreement” on the gun charge.
The indictment center around a revolver Biden purchased from a Delaware gun shop and owned for about 11 days in October 2018. He was struggling with a cocaine addiction at the time, but he claimed to not be illegally using or addicted to drugs on government forms.
U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika is overseeing the trial in Wilmington, Delaware, which is where the Bidens call home. The trial began on Monday with 12 jurors and 4 alternates being selected. Members of the Biden family, including First Lady Jill Biden and Hunter’s half-sister Ashley Biden, have been in the courtroom all week.
Opening statements were delivered on Tuesday. By Friday, the prosecution had rested its case after calling an array of witnesses including his ex-wife Kathleen Buhle, sister-in-law and former lover Hallie Biden, and ex-girlfriend Zoe Kestan. All three women testified to his rampant drug use. Prosecutors also brought in his infamous laptop, memoir, and text messages as evidence.
Biden’s defense team took over on Friday and called his eldest daughter, Naomi Biden, to the stand. The defense strategy appears to be that Biden did not believe himself to be an active addict at the time of the gun purchase.
