A disturbing case out of Illinois as a mother allegedly killed her two-year-old son just hours after discussing the Lindsay Clancy case in a group text message with friends.
The Murder
As reported on Monday’s AM Update, Corie Walsh is facing first-degree murder charges in connection with the death of her son Barrett, according to police. Per court documents obtained by CNN, a neighbor discovered the child hanging in the basement last Tuesday afternoon with a ligature bound around his neck.
The neighbor immediately lowered Barrett and began CPR while calling 911. Paramedics pronounced the child dead at the scene, while an autopsy reportedly confirmed he died of asphyxiation. The neighbor found Walsh upstairs lying in a bathtub full of bloody water, trying allegedly to commit suicide, according to court documents.
The 40 year old was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, and three other children in the home were found safe.
ABC7 Chicago reported Walsh told officers at the scene that she killed her son because “he was the devil and the anti-Christ.” Once at the hospital, she reportedly told investigators an account of the murder that matched evidence found at the scene.
Walsh is currently being held at the Will County Adult Detention Facility and was denied pre-trial release during a court hearing on Tuesday. Her next appearance is scheduled for September 24.
Clancy Connection?
The case has drawn immediate parallels to the highly publicized Clancy case, in which the Massachusetts mother strangled her three children with exercise cords in January 2023. Clancy’s lawyers, who at no point denied her culpability, argued she was suffering from postpartum psychosis at the time of the killings.
A mistrial was declared in the case on Friday after jurors deadlocked following seven days of deliberations.
According to ABC7 Chicago, Walsh’s lawyer similarly claimed she was going through a psychotic episode before killing her young son. Some legal analysts believe the fact that Walsh was texting about the Clancy case hours before the murder will be key to this case should it end up before a jury.
