NBC Gave Viewers an Insane ‘Trigger Warning’ During Coverage of Supreme Court ‘Trans’ Athlete Decision

In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court ruled states can bar biological boys and men from competing in girls’ and women’s sports.

The 6-3 ruling came down Tuesday morning, which led to breaking news alerts across broadcast and cable news channels. On NBC News, Today anchor Craig Melvin anchored the special coverage in which he read from the high court’s decisions.

Before bringing viewers the news, however, he issued a bizarre warning about potentially offensive language and pronoun usage that immediately came under scrutiny.

The ‘Trigger Warning

During a report with NBC News White House correspondent Kelly O’Donnell, Melvin explained that the language he was about to use was reflective of what was written in the majority opinion authored by Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Watch:

“Just a quick note here. The terms that we’re using here during our reporting, ‘biological male,’ ‘biological female,’ the high court put those terms in quotations in their decision and their dissent,” NBC News anchor Craig Melvin said.

“But just so you know, we’re using those terms from the decision itself, ‘biological male,’ ‘biological female,’” he added.

Return to Reality

Megyn said the clarification was laughable. “It’s basically a trigger warning for the NBC audience that we’re going to stick to reality in this report. Just had to make sure everybody understands they’re just doing it because the Supreme Court of the United States does it that way,” she noted.

Alliance Defending Freedom president and chief counsel Kristen Waggoner, who took this issue all the way to the Supreme Court, said the high court’s decision was refreshing because of how sanely it was written.

“The decision does say sex means sex, it doesn’t mean gender identity. There are a lot of really good nuggets in here,” she said. “At the oral argument, remember, they were using all these terms of ‘transgender girls’ and wrong pronouns, and it was hard to track… You did not see that in this decision. There are no wrong pronouns, there is no ‘transgender girl.'”
