Five years after getting a double mastectomy to remove her healthy breasts and ‘transitioning’ from female to male, the actor formerly known as Ellen Page landed the cover of New York Magazine’s first-ever “Men’s Style” issue.
The Cover
Page, who now goes by Elliot and uses he/they pronouns, appeared on the front of the glossy sans shirt and showing off the scars from her so-called “top surgery.” In an article headlined “The Men’s Style Issue,” the magazine recounted its provocative history covering men’s fashion.
“Over the years, we have often returned to the subject of men’s style. There was the 1971 cover story wondering if men would get into high heels for fall and the 1996 profile of male supermodels (‘They’re hot, they’re rich, they’re openly straight,’ read the cover line),” the piece stated. “For several seasons starting in 2006, the back half of the women’s fashion issue was a mini men’s magazine and featured a baby Thom Browne fresh off his first CFDA Award win and metrosexuals done up in their aughts finery sipping Peronis at Bungalow 8.”
We can only assume that trip through the archive was meant to add context to the selection of a biological female presenting as a male for one of the issue’s covers. In one of several iterations, Page is photographed partially clothed at a bathhouse.
Inside the mag, the Juno star talked about how she recently started visiting bathhouses because it was only since transitioning that she has been comfortable with the thought of disrobing in public. “I went to a bathhouse recently. I’ve only in the past couple of years been like, ‘Yeah, that sounds nice, to like go somewhere and sit around in your body like that.’ I do sing in the shower sometimes,” Page claimed.
The magazine cover comes after Page’s recent headlining-making comments about being an expert on “healthy masculinity” since transitioning. In her view, “healthy” men know how to… enjoy a “really good cry” and smile in photos.
Megyn’s Take
On Monday’s show, Megyn reacted to the New York Mag cover and explained why she finds the photos difficult to look at. Below are her remarks, edited for length and clarity.
“Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen Page, star of Juno, is gracing the cover of New York Magazine right now. That is because it is celebrating men’s [style]. Men’s.
I almost cannot look at this. I am not saying this to be mean. I am just being honest. I am repulsed by what I see there. I am genuinely repulsed by the body mutilation that this beautiful young woman has done to herself and the masquerading she is doing for the world and her own mirror. The fact that New York Magazine wants us to celebrate this as an example of men’s [style] is abhorrent. It is deeply offensive.
This is the opposite of men’s anything. This is an example of a woman’s illness–mental illness to be exact. That is why it was in the DSM-5. This is not to be celebrated. And New York Magazine, you are doing something very dangerous by putting this person on the cover in an effort to celebrate what she has done to her body and her breasts, which will never look male. All you need to do is hear Elliot Page speak, and you will hear what is clearly a manipulated voice, a voice that has been so testosteroned up, it will never sound female again, but it will never be male either. It is stuck in some in between that is only deeply disturbing.
They think they are being woke and tolerant. What they are actually being is dangerous to other young people who have been swept up or are considering getting swept up in this ideology, who now see, oh, look, you get celebrated on the cover of New York Magazine for this shit. You don’t get shamed. You don’t get ignored. You get celebrated as an example.
I find this disgusting. I really, really wish that Elliot Page would get the help she obviously so desperately deserves and needs. I think that ship has sailed.”
