From disgraced duchess to… senator? That is the transition Meghan Markle was reportedly trying to make after Joe Biden and Kamala Harris won the 2020 election.
As the couple prepare to return to England in the coming weeks following a shock announcement, new reports are shedding light on just how many things didn’t pan out for the pair they way they had seemingly planned when they decided to leave the Royal Family in January 2020’s infamous “Megxit.”.
One such miss? Markle alleged dreams of making her way to Washington, D.C., to replace Harris in the Senate after she became vice president.
Senator Markle?
According to an exclusive New York Post report published last week, Markle was angling for a career in Washington, D.C., that she sought to kickstart not with an earnest run for office but rather via a plum appointment.
A source told The Post reported that weeks before Biden’s win over President Donald Trump, the former Suits actress requested a meeting with California Gov. Gavin Newsom because she “wanted to be considered to be appointed” to the seat held by Harris, which she vacated just before becoming vice president on January 20, 2021.
The insider added that the discussion was publicly described as a welcome-to-California chat to head off potential inquiries. The Post noted that a memo from the governor’s office that surfaced in February 2021 confirmed Newsom has an “introductory meeting” with the couple on October 19, 2020. No specifics were released, and it is unclear whether Markle asked to meet with the governor separately after the election.
Newsom ultimately selected California Secretary of State Alex Padilla for the interim role, and he won reelection for a full six-year term in 2022.
Another source “firmly denied” Markle had any interest in the seat, while a rep for Newsom did not respond to request for comment. On Monday’s Megyn Kelly Show, Megyn said the silence from Newsom’s camp is telling. “That means it’s true, in my opinion,” she said.
“I’m sure she said, ‘I’m Californian and I’m black, just like Kamala Harris. And so I would be such a logical choice to just slide into that seat,'” Megyn speculated. “[And Newsom] knew there was zero chance he should give this no nothing dealer no deal spokesmodel a U.S. Senate seat.”
‘Backward’ Thinking
Megyn guest, The Daily Wire’s Michael Knowles, said the report further illustrates just how “backward” the As Ever founder’s priorities were. “I mean, think about this… You are a pretty senior royal. You did it. You bagged the prince. This is your fairy tale life, and you want to trade that in to be a senator? That actually is supposed to be a downgrade. And then the most extreme version, of course, is she wants to trade that in to be an actress,” he noted.
“It’s just so sad. It’s the story of people who get everything backwards,” Knowles continued. “They’re constantly trading loyalty to their family for the affection of a capricious public. They’re trading service and the dignity of work for the illusion or the appearance of work and the appearance of importance. They’re just mortgaging the things that really matter for illusory goods that disappear.”
In many ways, Knowles believes Markle’s alleged ambitions reflect the state of society today. “It’s just people substituting lower goods for higher goods, which is kind of the story of modernity. And so, in many ways, Meghan Markle is the voice of a generation,” he said.
While Knowles said Markle and the “miscreants on Capitol Hill” could have been “a match made in heaven,” parachuting into the role obviously didn’t pan out for the one-time Deal or No Deal model and the story, as he sees it, is not unlike many of her and Harry’s other failed ventures. “I think their big shock is people are supposed to love them, but the people don’t love them… and so now they have to figure out what it is that they do,” he posited.
“The fact that they’re moving back to the U.K. reminds me of a line that a recovering alcoholic buddy of mine told me… ‘Wherever you go, that’s where you are’… You can’t escape your problems,” Knowles added. “Whatever issues Mr. and Mrs. Markle have – and they are many – are not going to be resolved by yet another move back across the pond.”
