Back in May when 23-1 odds long shot Golden Tempo came from behind to win the Kentucky Derby and make trainer Cherie DeVaux the first woman to win the Triple Crown race, Megyn reminisced about her childhood in upstate New York near the historic Saratoga Race Course.
“I can’t stop looking at the videos of [the Derby]… I teared up multiple times watching this horse come from behind,” she said at the time. “I do love horse racing. I grew up steps away from Saratoga Raceway, which I absolutely adore.”
Earlier this summer, serial entrepreneur and horse owner Mike Repole joined Megyn on the show to talk about his experience at the Derby – where his horse Renegade, ridden by the brother of Golden Tempo jockey José Ortiz, finish second – and the sport in general.
Megyn shared that she tries to get Doug and the kids to Saratoga whenever possible in the summer, and, this past weekend, they made the trip.
“Spectacular day at #saratogaracetrack today with @douglas_brunt & the fam,” she posted on Instagram. “So great spending time with Mike Repole too (whose stable could not stop winning) and ‘meeting’ RENEGADE – WINNER of the Jim Dandy who gave us all a thrilling victory! Love my upstate NY. ❤️”
But they made time for more than just the races. On Tuesday’s show, Megyn shared that her family also visited a local bookstore where she had a little fun after discovering they stocked Doug’s latest bestseller, The Lost Empire of Emanuel Nobel.
“We were in a bookstore, and they had a bunch of them and Doug offered to sign them. It’s always nice if the author will sign it, and then the bookstore can sell it saying ‘signed by the author,'” Megyn explained. “I go over there just as he is starting, and I said, ‘Would you stop doing that? I’m so sorry. He has this habit of going into bookstores and claiming he is the author. He is not. He just likes to sign books.'”
The kicker? The sales associate believed her. “The woman’s face. She believed me. I got such a kick out of my own joke,” Megyn shared.
But all’s well that ends well. “Anyway, she looked at the photo [on the book jacket] and realized I was joking,” Megyn confirmed. “But I’m still amused by my own joke, as you can see.”
