Nancy Pelosi’s husband just had yet another run-in with the law.
Paul Pelosi, the 86-year-old husband of the Democratic California congresswoman and so-called “Speaker Emeritus,” could face hit-and-run charges after a car crash in Napa County, California, over the weekend.
The Crash
As reported on Monday’s AM Update, Pelosi was driving a convertible when he struck an unoccupied parked car Friday afternoon in the Napa Valley city of Yountville. A witness recounted Pelosi briefly stopped before driving away. The accident reportedly caused major damage to the parked vehicle.
According to the Napa County Sheriff’s office, deputies located Pelosi approximately a quarter-mile away from the crash. Pelosi reportedly told authorities he knew he had hit something, but “he did not know what he had hit, so he kept driving… until his car became disabled and was no longer able to continue driving.” Authorities said there was no indication that alcohol or drugs were a factor.
The Napa County Sheriff’s office recommended a misdemeanor charge of leaving the scene of a property-damage collision and forwarded the case to the District Attorney’s Office. The octogenarian was not taken into custody because no one was injured.
A Pelosi family spokesperson released a statement after the crash, claiming he has taken responsibility for.
“Mr. Paul Pelosi has personally apologized to the owner of the vehicle and assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle. Speaker Pelosi will not be commenting further on this private matter.”
Previous Incidents
This was not Pelosi’s first run-in with law enforcement related to his driving. In May 2022, then-Speaker Pelosi’s husband was arrested after an accident and later pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury (read: DUI).
He was sentenced to five days in jail and three years of probation, as well as thousands in fines and victim restitution. He was credited for time served and completed a one-day work program at the courthouse rather than spending more time in jail.
Later that year, Pelosi was attacked with a hammer by David DePape, after the man broke into his San Francisco house. Authorities said the attacker was looking for the congresswoman who was not home at the time.
In 1957, as a teenager, Pelosi was driving when his car flipped over in a tragic accident that killed his older brother who was a passenger in the vehicle. He was initially cited for manslaughter, but those charges were later dropped.
The Napa County sheriff’s office now requesting the Department of Motor Vehicles examine whether Pelosi should be allowed to continue to drive, a process that apparently happens when an elderly driver is involved.
