President Donald Trump delivered the longest State of the Union address in American history Tuesday night, clocking in at just under one hour and 48 minutes.
The performance was vintage Trump – highlighting his administration’s successes and the Democrats’ failures; honoring the best of us, like America’s war heroes, Olympic champions, and Charlie Kirk; and acknowledging the grief and pain of individuals who have suffered losses from the Democrats’ radical policies on crime and the border.
The speech appears to have been well-received. A CNN poll found that 64 percent of viewers had at least a somewhat positive reaction to it. In a survey conducted prior to the speech, 54 percent said they believed his policies would move the country in the right direction, while 64 percent responded that way afterward. Before the address, 44 percent said they believed Trump has had the right priorities, compared to 54 percent immediately following its conclusion.
The Best and Worst
On Wednesday’s edition of The Megyn Kelly Show, Megyn gave the president an ‘A’ grade for the night because he “stayed in good humor… didn’t go after the Supreme Court in the way that he could have… [and] did a great job with the personal stories.”
“They always do this at the State of the Union, but these, I thought, were especially memorable, and very effective, and very dangerous traps for the Democrats in the hall,” she said.
One of those “traps” came when he asked those in attendance to stand if they agreed with the “fundamental principle” that the “first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens.” Democrat lawmakers in attendance didn’t get out of their seats, and Trump didn’t let that go unnoticed. “You should be ashamed of yourself for not standing up,” the president scolded. “You should be ashamed of yourself.”
But not all Dems even bothered to show up, with some instead choosing to attend alternate events featuring ‘Resistance’ protesters in frog costumes. Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger, meanwhile, was tapped to deliver the official Democrat response following the president’s remarks.
