A shooter opened fire on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas, Texas, Wednesday morning, killing one and injuring two before turning the gun on himself. Authorities confirmed no law enforcement officers were injured in the attack. Instead, all three victims were ICE detainees.
As reported on Thursday’s AM Update, the attack occurred around 6:40am local time when a sniper, positioned on a nearby rooftop, began firing indiscriminately at the facility, including towards a van at a secured entryway. The victims were believed to be inside the vehicle when they were hit. The body of the shooter, who has been identified as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, was found dead with a rifle nearby on a rooftop.
Potential Motive
FBI Director Kash Patel released a photo showing shell casings that were recovered near the shooter. One had the words “ANTI-ICE” written on the side. He subsequently revealed in an X post Thursday that “further accumulated evidence… indicates a high degree of pre-attack planning.”
According to Patel, that included the suspect “search[ing] apps that tracked the presence of ICE agents” over the course of a week in August, “download[ing] a document titled ‘Dallas County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management’ containing a list of DHS facilities,” and “conduct[ing] multiple searches of ballistics and the ‘Charlie Kirk Shot Video'” between September 23 and September 24.
The director also revealed that one of the handwritten notes recovered during the investigation read, “Hopefully this will give ICE agents real terror, to think, ‘is there a sniper with AP rounds on that roof?'”
The FBI special agent in charge of the Dallas field office, Joseph Rothrock, said at a press conference that the bureau is “investigating this incident as an act of targeted violence,” calling it the “most recent example we’ve seen of targeted violence.”
Rothrock also referenced a July 4 attack on an immigration detention center in Alvarado, Texas, in which at least 10 people armed with tactical gear and weapons allegedly attacked the facility. A local law enforcement officer was struck in the process, and that officer is expected to recover.
All told, Wednesday’s shooting marked at least the fourth violent incident or threat against a Texas ICE or Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) facility this year.
Media Malpractice
Despite the information currently available about the shooter – much of which was reported in the hours after the attack – and the fact that politicians and pundits on the left have ramped up their rhetoric in the wake of the Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration enforcement, the corporate media has been conspicuously vague about a potential motive.
Megyn called that out on Thursday’s edition of The Megyn Kelly Show. “They don’t want to tell you he was clearly motivated by leftist ideology… He was anti-ICE… You don’t have to go far. Read the damn bullet. It’s right there in black and white,” she said. “This guy was motivated by you lunatics who were out there ripping on ICE, demonizing ICE. And now we know that. This isn’t Megyn Kelly’s speculation… we know that because [of Patel’s] tweet.”
To that point, Washington Free Beacon editor-in-chief Eliana Johnson pulled just a few examples of the obfuscation. “We are at a place where you can’t get the news from the news media. I’m looking at a piece in The Hill where it says ‘motive sought in Dallas ICE facility shooting,’ and The New York Times writes ‘the actual motivation behind the messages written on the bullets in both Mr. Kirk’s assassination and Wednesday’s killing are still not known,'” she noted. “This is why people don’t trust the media. You cannot get the truth or the news from them.”
As After Party host Emily Jashinsky explained, the “insane delusion” is because the most recent examples of political violence – the murder of Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman, the assassination of Charlie Kirk, and this ICE incident – don’t fit the preferred narrative.
“What’s even worse, in some cases, than them openly lying is that they’ve deluded themselves into believing it actually lets the left off the hook to say, ‘Well, this guy was just a weirdo. He was deep in online spaces’… as though that excuses the left,” she said. “Even though, when we’re looking at the last three heinous acts of political violence that have occurred within the space of basically a month… directionally, what they’re doing is blatantly anti-conservative, it is blatantly anti-right violence in every case.”
Megyn said the lack of transparency has dangerous consequences. “It actually matters because the lying media are infecting these people’s brains. Where did… the Charlie shooter get… ‘he’s full of hate’?Why is this guy ‘anti-ICE,'” she asked. “The media is a huge part of the problem, and they show zero self-awareness.”
