I was down in Florida this weekend speaking to the future of the conservative movement at the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit. One of the big topics – not just from my conversation with Charlie Kirk but from the young people in that audience and virtually every presenter – was Jeffrey Epstein.
It was one week ago today we were talking about that leaked joint memo from the Department of Justice and FBI that was dropped in an Axios report. And here we are, a week later, and this story is far from over.
Playing Politics
I think the DOJ hoped they would put this thing to bed with the memo. Clearly, that hasn’t happened. Not all, but most conservatives are up in arms over this. That was certainly the case for all the young people at the Turning Point event.
And now the left is kind of looking over at the other side of the aisle and saying, ‘Maybe we’re into Epstein, too, after years of dismissing it as a conspiracy theory.’ Now that they think it can hurt Trump, they are expressing interest. It is such bullsh-t.
As you know, Epstein has never been my main story. We have covered it over the years as news has been made. But let’s not be so nakedly partisan and political over the molestation of little girls. F-ck these Johnny-come-latelys who just want to use it as a battering ram over Donald Trump politically.
I have zero desire to hurt Trump as an electoral matter. I am on his side, and I have been very open about that. But I prize honesty first and foremost. So, as my guest Michael Shellenberger said on The Megyn Kelly Show on Monday, this is an awkward moment. You really have to make sure you have your integrity and your commitment to honest reporting, and you are not letting your fondness for the administration drive the way you cover it.
On the other hand, as soon as I see the left jumping on the bandwagon I’m like, ‘Ew. That makes me want to leave this little lily pad.’ I don’t want to be on the same side as Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) on anything, but I kind of would like to see a hearing or a congressional subpoena on this matter.
If all that is left of the so-called “Epstein Files” are secret grand jury testimony that we have no legal right to or stuff that could potentially be problematic for an individual wrongly accused or the victims, a congressional subpoena could handle all of that and take the pressure off of the DOJ and FBI.
If they are not interested in covering anything up, then they should welcome it. Let it be Congress’ problem. Some people in the administration may actually want that.
Latest Controversy
The latest controversy in the fallout has to do with whether Epstein was some kind of Israeli intelligence asset. On the show today, Ben Shapiro referenced a statement former prime minister of Israel Naftali Bennett posted on X denying the allegation.
“As a former Israeli Prime Minister, with the Mossad having reported directly to me, I say to you with 100 percent certainty: The accusation that Jeffrey Epstein somehow worked for Israel or the Mossad running a blackmail ring is categorically and totally false,” he wrote, in part, before calling out Tucker Carlson by name for comments he has made on the subject.
I don’t actively disbelieve Bennett, but I don’t believe him either. Of course he is going to say no.
What is making me uncomfortable is that I am just trying to lay out the facts. Tucker is saying what his opinion is, which is not outside of the mainstream at all. He thinks Epstein worked for Mossad or was somehow an asset to them.
Even if you are as staunch a defender of Israel’s right to defend itself after the horrific attack on October 7 and of American Jews who are facing overwhelming discrimination on college campuses as I am, you get lunatics accusing you of being antisemitic because you are exploring this theory.
Megyn’s Message
I will just say this for the record: If you think those kinds of smears are going to stop me from reporting, you haven’t been paying attention to my career. At all. If anything, when you accuse me of stuff like that, I will double, triple, and quadruple down. It tells me that I am on to something.
Nice try, but you have chosen the wrong person.
I have been a defender of Israel. People who say I am not don’t know me at all. I am allowed to figure out what Jeffrey Epstein’s actual connections were. And if that leads me to our government or Israel’s government, too bad.
