It was the shove seen around the world…
As reported on Tuesday’s AM Update, a viral video appears to show French First Lady Brigitte Macron shoving her husband, French President Emmanuel Macron, in the face on Sunday as the couple prepared to disembark a plane in Vietnam.
The Video
The Macrons had just landed for a stop on their tour of southeast Asia when the private moment was caught on camera. Watch:
Video shows a uniformed man opening the door of the aircraft as the president is standing in the vestibule area in a suit and his wife is mostly hidden. Mrs. Macron’s arms, in a red blazer, can then be seen reaching out and shoving her husband with enough force to push him slightly sideways as her hands end up on his chin and cheek.
President Macron appeared startled, but he recovered quickly enough to smile and wave to the crowd gathered on the tarmac. The clip, recorded by The Associated Press, spread like wildfire across the internet, with French newspapers asking if it was a “slap or a squabble.”
Macron Responds
But the French leader, who has been married to Brigitte since 2007, attempted to brush off the incident when he spoke to the press. “There’s a video showing me joking and teasing my wife and somehow that becomes a sort of geo-planetary catastrophe, with people even coming up with theories to explain it,” he said in remarks translated from French. “We are horsing around and, really, joking with my wife.”
“Everyone needs to calm down,” he added.
