When it comes to finding a greater meaning and connection in love and relationships, Carlos and Alexa PenaVega have proved it is possible.
The couple rose to fame at a young age – Alexa (née Vega) as the star of movies like Spy Kids and Carlos (né Pena) as a member of the boy band Big Time Rush – and struggled to find love and faith in Hollywood. At the urging of a mutual friend, the two attended the same Bible study in California in 2012 and the rest is, well, history. They tied the knot in 2014 and have three children together. While the pair still acts and tours, they split their time between Hawaii and Florida to avoid the trappings of Hollywood culture.
On Tuesday’s show, the PenaVegas joined Megyn to discuss their new book Love Is the Point and why paying attention to the details is such an important part of a healthy relationship. That led Megyn to share a funny ‘detail’ about her husband Doug that she just recently noticed after nearly two decades together.
Love Is the Point
In an increasingly digital and secular world, Megyn wondered how younger people who are struggling to find meaningful connections can adopt the idea that “love is the point” in their life.
Alexa emphasized that faith and service – not self-focus – play a big role in their relationship and also played a big role in how they met. She recalled that it was just before she and Carlos were first introduced that he had an epiphany about who he was and what he wanted from life. “[Carlos] just gave up control – [he] was like, ‘You know what, God, I want you to use me. I don’t want it to be about me. I just want to serve,’” she shared. “And then it was literally that week that we met at Bible study. It was that week that your entire life transformed.”
Carlos, who just returned home after touring with Big Time Rush, admitted he binged the Netflix series Too Hot To Handle on the road. What stuck out to him was how the single people on the show prioritized sexual desires despite the fact that they were hoping to find something more. “I feel like when you are trying to court someone – which I hope people still do because it’s just beautiful – you really have to get to know them, get to know their heart,” he shared.
He noted that Alexa played a little hard to get when they first met, which actually fostered a deeper long-term connection. “I think we had so much time to… connect emotionally,” he said. That act of really getting to know someone “changes things for you,” he noted. “So just take the time, take the time to actually learn who this person is… find out those little quirky details – love is in the details.”
Love Is in the Details
The concept of love being in the details really stood out to Megyn. While there have been plenty of examples of that in her relationship with her husband Doug over the years, there was a rather humorous ‘detail’ she only recently discovered. “For the first time after 15 years of marriage, 17 years of my relationship with my husband, I… actually observed and took note of his morning routine,” she said.
Let’s just say she was amazed by the simplicity. “Guys, it is literally three things: He brushes his teeth, he puts on deodorant, and he splashes water on his hair,” she shared. As it relates to the last bit of grooming, “he doesn’t have a brush,” she exclaimed.
Megyn did not divulge the length of her A.M. regimen, but it’s safe to assume it is at least a little longer than three steps. “This is clearly not a woman,” she joked. “This is a man.”
So while it may have taken her 17 years to notice this particular minutia, Megyn agreed that “it is true: love is in the details.”
