Once upon a time, Meghan Markle was an actress starring in Suits and Hallmark movies in addition to her turn as a briefcase model on Deal or No Deal. Those roles did not net Markle any awards, but she can now officially add “Emmy nominee” to her resume.
The actress-turned royal-turned ‘founder’ was nominated for a Daytime Emmy for her widely panned Netflix series With Love, Meghan. The recognition comes months after the show – which claimed to reimagine the “genre of lifestyle programming, blending practical how-to’s and candid conversation with friends, new and old” – was cancelled by the streaming giant.
On Wednesday’s program, Megyn was joined by Adam Carolla, host of The Adam Carolla Show, to discuss Markle’s Emmy nom and why it represents just how far Hollywood has fallen.
The Nomination
The Daytime Emmy nominations were revealed on Tuesday and With Love, Meghan was announced as one of the nominees in the Outstanding Lifestyle Program category. The show will be up against A Different Breed, George to the Rescue, The Motherhood, and The Wizard of Paws at the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards on October 30.
Markle reacted to the news on her Instagram account. “A huge congratulations to the amazing crew, producers, and team who worked on ‘With Love, Meghan’ on @netflix,” she wrote.
The series featuring the former royal spending time with “friends” at a rented Montecito, California, estate as she shares her cooking, gardening, and hosting tips premiered on Netflix in March 2025. An eight-episode “season two” dropped in September, though it is believed to have been filmed at the same time as season one and did not represent an actual pick up.
Netflix and Markle also teamed up for a holiday special before Page Six reported in January that the show would not be returning for a third season after the heavily criticized second season failed to crack Netflix’s Top 10 show list.
By March, the streaming giant had further distanced itself from Markle, ending its partnership with her As Ever line of jams, teas, and flower sprinkles.
“Meghan’s passion for elevating everyday moments in beautiful yet simple ways inspired the creation of the As Ever brand, and we are glad to have played a role in bringing that vision to life. As it was always intended, Meghan will continue growing the brand and take it into its next chapter independently,” a Netflix spokesperson told Page Six at the time. “We look forward to celebrating how she continues to bring joy to households around the world.”
Canceled With Love
How With Love, Meghan snagged an Emmy nod when MK Media’s parody program With Love, Megyn did not, the world may never know. But it is also hard to square how Markle’s series got the recognition despite the lack of critical or audience acclaim.
“This show that has now been Emmy nominated, first of all, had a 38 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. The Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Consensus called it ‘insistently pleasant, but ultimately sterile.’ Vulture, ‘an utterly deranged, bizarro world voyage into the center of nothing.’ Season two, per The Times of London, ‘occupies the sweet spot where irrelevant meets intolerable.’ The Telegraph, a two-star review, dubbing her the ‘Montecito Marie Antoinette’… Here was one that was slightly better from The Guardian, which also gave it two stars, calling it ‘so painfully contrived that it’s genuinely fascinating.'”
Those critiques no doubt come from the fact that Markle spent much of the series having stilted conversations with celebrity “friends” she seemed to hardly know while offering uninspired tips about how to repackage pretzels from the grocery store (yes, really). Here’s a sampling from the trailer:
“I don’t call myself a hero, but one time I did take smoked almonds from the canister and I put them in a bowl, and I was celebrated,” Carolla quipped. “Another time… I took some Fiesta Mix. Actually, I stole the packets from a commercial flight. But when I got home, I emptied them into a different bowl. So, you know, I understand that feeling of exhilaration, the feeling of coming alive when you take a dried trail mix and dump it into an ashtray.”
End of an Era?
With all of that said, Carolla is not surprised Markle snagged a nomination. “Remember when [Barack] Obama got the [Nobel] Peace Prize before he even entered the office? This is kind of what the elites do,” he said.
In Carolla’s view, the nom is but the last indication of how little awards and awards shows matter anymore. “This is why the Oscars are worthless and nobody watches anymore. Emmys, all these sort of plaques, honors, and prizes, they just kind of go one direction and it does become a popularity contest or some sort of little kitschy club. All of a sudden, you’re back in high school again,” he explained.
“They basically took their awards and they undervalued them like some sort of foreign currency when a banana dictator takes over… That is what has happened to the Emmys and the Oscars,” he continued. “Nobody gives a shit anymore because they just hand them out to their friends… I think it is just one more step closer to the grave for Hollywood and awards… It was appointment viewing, and now no one cares anymore.”
