Meghan Markle Gave a Speech No One Showed Up to After Widely Panned Mirror Selfie with Daughter Lilibet

Despite leaving the Royal Family by choice, Meghan Markle is continuing to travel the world acting like a member of the Royal Family.

The latest jaunt brought her to Switzerland for a speech about the dangers of social media, which she delivered after a widely panned photo of her and her daughter… on social media. To add insult to injury, the only people who seemingly bothered to show up for Markle’s remarks were members of the press.

On Tuesday’s show, Megyn was joined by her husband Doug Brunt, author of The Lost Empire of Emanuel Nobel, to discuss the latest faux pas and what it reveals about her waning relevance.

The Social Media Post

In a move that is being panned as “tone deaf” and “hypocritical,” Markle posted a mirror selfie on Instagram inside a luxurious walk-in closet while her daughter Lilibet sat at her feet. She captioned the snap “Mama’s little helper” with a purple-heart emoji.

The picture is full of pricey duds, including a black Giorgio Armani suit jacket and designer shoes, which did not go over well online. In Megyn’s view, it was the As Ever founder’s latest failed attempt to appear “relatable” while exhibiting exactly no self-awareness. “She posted on social media… a picture of herself surrounded by designer clothing… [like], ‘It’s just me, admiring me as my daughter admires me in my closet of designer clothes. This is how I want you to understand how relatable I am,’” she joked.

And while the child’s face was not visible, many critics pointed out the hypocrisy of the former Suits actress posting a picture of her child right before giving a speech about protecting children from the harms of social media.

The Speech

But Markle may not have been concerned about the optics because she knew no one was going to pay attention to what she had to say. The mother-of-two was in Geneva on Sunday ahead of the opening of the 79th World Health Assembly, where she attended an event debuting the “Lost Screen Memorial” in Geneva’s Place des Nations.

Standing behind a lectern that read “No Child Lost to Social Media,” Markle referenced the children remembered in the installation, who died by suicide as a result of online bullying and digital harm, and claimed that safe online spaces are “not simply a technology issue,” but a “public health issue.”

While there was plenty of press on hand to cover the ceremony, the event seemed to lack actual guests. “She must be taken seriously. She’s humanitarian… She flies all the way over there and would you take a look at the crowd that showed up – or didn’t,” Megyn said. “They have all ropes up to protect her from crowds coming. There’s one woman in the background. No one is there…. We have video of a woman behind her who basically is putting a jacket on… yawning, stretching… The guy in Central Park we’ve seen blow those enormous bubbles gets a way bigger crowd than this.”

The problem for Markle, in Doug’s view, is that she has even managed to lose her “train wreck appeal” because “she’s already had about 10 train wrecks.” As a result, she was left to deliver a speech to a few confused tourists.

“No one cares,” Megyn said. “They say ‘smattering of applause.’ Well, this is a smattering of audience members. It’s officially over [for her] now.”
