The divorce rumors just don’t seem to end for Barack and Michelle Obama, and maybe that is because the two of them just can’t seem to stop talking about their marital issues.
The former president was in the midst of his European speaking tour this week when he admitted he has been “trying to dig myself out of a hole” in his relationship with his wife since he left the White House… nearly a decade ago.
On Friday’s show, Megyn was joined by Maureen Callahan, host of MK Media’s The Nerve, to discuss the latest breadcrumb in what has become a very long trail of unfortunate disclosures about the Obamas marriage.
The Confession
Obama was speaking at London’s O2 Arena on Wednesday when he admitted that his time as commander in chief put strain on his marriage “Since I left office, I have spent over eight years now trying to dig myself out of the hole I found myself in with Michelle,” the former president began.
After a pause and awkward laughter from the crowd, Obama uncomfortably chuckled before looking down and away from the interviewer and audience and adding, “That’s been challenging, but I feel like I’m making progress. I’m almost breaking even at the moment.”
It was a notable confession, Megyn said, because it was a rare opportunity to hear the ex-president’s interpretation of what the former first lady has been alluding to for years. “He’s telling the truth,” she said. “It is the other side of the first side we always cover, which is [Michelle] and how miserable she is.”
Yacht Tales
Obama’s remarks came on the heels of he and Michelle being spotted on a luxe vacation on Steven Spielberg’s $250 million superyacht off Italian coast earlier this month. Amid ongoing reports of marital strife, Callahan noted that the couple was photographed boarding the 357-foot luxury vessel separately.
The former first lady was greeted by the E.T. director when she arrived dressed in a head-to-toe denim look last Friday afternoon. Her husband, meanwhile, reportedly showed up with his Secret Service detail after 10pm local time. Once they were reunited, Callahan said the paparazzi photos show Barack spending quite a bit of time alone with his laptop while Michelle was nowhere to be seen.
“That’s probably how he is happiest, to be honest,” Megyn posited. “I actually feel kind of sorry for him because all she does is rip on him… She’ll throw out like one compliment in the midst of 30 disses. And what does he say as soon as he gets in front of it? He can’t even look up. He is looking down, like, ‘I’m just starting to make some headway and getting out of the enormous hole that I’m in.'”
Endgame?
At this point, Callahan wondered what the Obamas’ endgame is. “I know we have talked about this at length, and it feels like a real puzzle for the ages,” she said. “Why is he still whipping himself… Why is he still suffering?”
Megyn agreed. “It’s at the point where, if this had been a passing comment by her or by him once or twice, we shouldn’t make anything out of it. But it is all she says about her marriage,” she concluded. “It is time. They can easily say, ‘It didn’t work out. We’re going to part ways.’ And he can go with Jennifer Aniston or whomever.”
