‘I’m Rooting for Them’: Megyn Reacts to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s Engagement Announcement

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are officially engaged.

The pair posted pictures of him down on one knee and showing off the ring on Instagram with the caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨”

I am not a Taylor Swift fan for many reasons, but I respect the empire she has built. I respect that she stood up for herself. And I respect that she has some modicum of talent. But she went political and, like anybody who does that in the arts, they risk alienating half the country. And she has done that. She has done that very effectively.

However, with Taylor Swift being an American billionaire who is not even 40, I think it is great that she finally found love. I really do. I am rooting for them. I don’t think it is a coincidence that the person she ultimately decided to settle down with is a real man, is a football player, is a tough guy who doesn’t really take a lot of sh-t from people. That is generally attractive to most women.

I think it is no accident that this gal from the south who started out singing country songs found him attractive, and he was ultimately the one who won her heart. I also think it is obvious the reasons why he would be attracted to Taylor Swift, so I am rooting for them.

One thing about this couple that makes me a little uncomfortable is how it highlights people’s obsession with celebrity. Like, why are we so obsessed with celebrity? Within minutes of this post going up, it had millions of likes. They are being treated like they are American royalty.

My guest Matt Welch said the reason is that Swift is one of our last true pop stars. I would say her music is fine, but let’s not pretend she is one of the great artists or songwriters of all time. Her sound is kind of bubblegum, and it speaks to a certain population. There is certainly a place for that in our society. I just think she was treated like she was more important than that particular role, and she started to believe that she was more important than that kind of role.

She thought her endorsement in the 2024 election would be critical. She said she endorsed Kamala Harris because she chose Tim Walz and his crazy LGBTQ stance as her running mate. He is the most radical governor in the country on those issues. That is when I turned on her.

So, I am not her fan politically, but I do hope they have a wonderful, happy life together. I hope they make a bunch of beautiful children, and I hope she stays out of politics. I really genuinely hope that the last year was an example to her of how much easier and better her life will be if she just stays in her lane and lets people enjoy the music (or not), instead of trying to tell us what she thinks about LGBTQ policies.
