Martha Stewart is the OG lifestyle influencer who created a billion-dollar business empire that has spanned publishing, television, merchandise, and more.
She set the standard for what has become a space crowded with imitators. And as it turns out, the 83 year old has some very specific thoughts on some very specific celebrities (read: Gwyneth Paltrow and Meghan Markle) currently trying to make a name for themselves with lifestyle brands of their own.
On Thursday’s show, Megyn was joined by Glenn Greenwald, host of Rumble’s System Update, to discuss Stewart’s comments and why they amount to a “classic and effective Martha Stewart burn.”
Stewart’s Slam
During an interview with Yahoo Lifestyle released earlier this week, Stewart was asked what it’s like to watch celebrities like Paltrow and Markle follow in her footsteps. “I don’t mind. Good luck,” she said before offering her take on both women.
Stewart had nothing but praise for the Goop founder. “Gwyneth has been very successful, by the way. I think she created quite an interesting body of businesses,” she noted. “She’s admired… She won an Oscar for heaven’s sake as an actress! She’s pretty powerful.”
But she was less complimentary of Markle. “Meghan, I don’t really know very well, and I hope she knows what she’s talking about,” Stewart said. “Authenticity, to me, is everything. And to be authentic and knowledgeable about your subject matter is extremely important.”
Stewart has been known to thrown shade over her decades in the public eye, and her not-so-subtle dig at the actress-turned royal-turned aspiring domestic diva was, in Megyn’s view, a “classic and effective Martha Stewart burn.”
Greenwald agreed. “Martha Stewart sees exactly what Meghan Markle is,” he noted. “And one of the things I love about Martha Stewart is she is very blunt and has never hidden what she thinks, but it is very subtle. She is very good at that, and you walk away understanding exactly what she thinks.”
Ratings Woes
The diss comes amid yet another period of professional turmoil for Markle and her husband Prince Harry. Reports surfaced earlier this month that the couple’s $100 million content deal with Netflix will not be renewed.
While a second batch of episodes of the Suits alum’s With Love, Meghan series is still set to be released some time in the future, The New York Post reported the project failed to rank among Netflix’s top 300 most-watched titles between January and June.
The Post confirmed that Markle’s eight-part series ranked 383rd with just 5.3 million views since its debut on March 4. The outlet called those figures “unprecedented” for an original program that has been renewed, but many believe the unreleased episodes were filmed at the same time as the original set.
And the numbers only get worse for Harry. His latest offering, a December 2024 documentary called Polo, was reportedly only watched by half a million households in the first half of the year and came in at number 3,436 on the list.
“I’ve got clips of you, Glenn Greenwald, that have more [views] than that on our [YouTube] feed. It’s crazy how low that was,” Megyn quipped. “[They are] losers. Enjoy Montecito.”
