Kamala Harris is not running for governor of California in 2026, but she is… writing a book about her failed presidential campaign.
The former vice president made the dueling announcements this week as she appears ready to return to the public stage and test the waters ahead of potentially making a third attempt for the White House in 2028.
On Thursday’s show, Megyn was joined by Glenn Greenwald, host of Rumble’s System Update, to discuss the latest Harris news and why they couldn’t be more thrilled to have her back in the spotlight.
No-Go on Governor
After Harris lost to Donald Trump in the 2024 election, there was rampant speculation that she would return to California and mount a run for governor to replace the term-limited Gavin Newsom.
Harris served as state attorney general and U.S. senator before being tapped as Joe Biden’s running mate in 2020, but she announced on Wednesday that, after “giv[ing] serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their governor,” she will not enter the crowded Democratic primary.
“For now, my leadership — and public service — will not be in elected office,” she said in a statement. “I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation who will fight fearlessly, and sharing more details in the months ahead about my own plans.”
Many believe Harris is leaving the door open to make another run for president (it would be her third) in 2028, but, in the meantime, she wasted no time letting everyone know what her unelected “leadership” and “public service” will look like.
The Book Deal
On Thursday, Harris revealed that she is cashing in on her failed 2024 White House bid with a new book due out September 23. Titled 107 Days in reference to the length of her campaign after being crowned as Joe Biden’s replacement, the book promises a “behind-the-scenes” look at the “shortest presidential campaign in modern history.”
The former VP made the announcement in what Megyn called a very scripted and “very cringey” video shared across her social media channels. Watch:
Visibly reading from a teleprompter, Harris held up the book she claims is “not a recap of our race” but rather “a candid and personal account” of her journey. “Since leaving office, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on those days, talking with my team, my family, my friends, and pulling my thoughts together. In essence, writing a journal that is this book, 107 Days,” she said. “I believe there is value in sharing what I saw, what I learned, and what I know it will take to move forward.”
As usual, Megyn said Harris uttered a lot of words without saying anything at all. “You’ve said nothing,” she noted. “You’ve once again failed to inspire us or even titillate us with the tease you’re supposed to be doing at all.”
Write Stuff?
Greenwald said Harris is but the latest “failed politician” who has been “immediately able to go and get mega rich by writing some self-serving book.” Biden reportedly received a $10 million dollar advance for his forthcoming memoir, and he estimated Harris received “many millions of dollars” as well.
He believes both works will amount to a “chronicle of failure,” but Greenwald said the premise of Harris’ is particularly galling. “What is so grating about this, among other things, is that the title itself is nothing but an excuse. It’s basically a way of saying, ‘Yes, I lost. But it’s not my fault. I only had 107 days,'” he explained. “The whole point of the framing is to say ‘I had the shortest campaign in the history’ when, in reality, had she run a good campaign, had she been an interesting person, a substantive person, that could have helped her because a lot of times too much exposure is what reveals your flaws.”
In his view, Harris “ruined her campaign by who she is” and this is but the latest example of that. “Even in this announcement, it is so free of substance,” Greenwald said. “This is supposed to be a person who wants to be president… She doesn’t have a thing to say.”
It is for all these reasons that Megyn said she is thrilled to see Harris again. “I welcome her back into the spotlight,” she joked. “Come on in, sister. The water’s fine. It’s great to see you again.”
