‘I’m Concerned’: What Went Wrong When Megyn Tried to Buy a Simple Mat for Her Bathroom

I am at the beach for the summer with my family, and we are in a rental. It’s a long story, but our house had to have some renovations and this is now the second summer we’ve had to rent because the reno is taking forever.

As it turns out, this rental home did not come with any linens. We got here and there was nothing – no sheets, no blankets, no towels. I am sure somebody told me this in advance and I just forgot, but it meant that I had to run around to get all the stuff that we need.

Thankfully, there is a Target close by. I went a little crazy at Target. In addition to the bed spreads and towels, I decided to get a little rug for the bathroom because the floor is too cold and I like the floor to have a little heat on it. It is not the prettiest rug I have ever seen, but it’s fine. You can see for yourself in the picture below:

It’s fine, right? It was relatively cheap, and I figured it would work in the house for a few months before we find another use for it after that. But when I got it home and started pulling all the tags off, I discovered something that caused me some alarm.

The tag reads as follows: “Fiber: Made of miscellaneous scraps of undetermined fiber content.”

What does that mean? I’m concerned.

Then, the care instructions say: “Vacuum regularly, do not use beater brush, blot spills promptly, spot clean with mild cleaning solution, do not bleach, professional rug cleaning…”

Now, what does that mean? Do I have to have a professional rug cleaning, or do I vacuum regularly? I don’t understand. What is in the scraps that makes this necessary?

And I have to tell you something very bad. I was standing on it doing my makeup and my feet started to itch. Something is in the rug. I am allergic to penicillin. Do you think there is penicillin in there? Why are my feet itching when I am standing on it barefoot? I am telling you, there are like fingers and toes in this thing.

One of my guests today, Michael Moynihan of The Fifth Column, pointed out that I could have bought a nicer rug and saved it for use in our home once the renovation is complete. That did occur to me – but not until after I had already bought this one.

He also suggested I auction it off for charity, but I don’t think it would be safe to send through the mail. I don’t think it would clear security. There is something deeply wrong with my rug, and The Fifth Column guys confirmed I should get rid of it. So, alas, I am back to square one.
