We have to talk about Jennifer Lopez because her ensemble at a recent Pride event is indicative of a serious problem in our culture.
JLo performed at the 2025 World Pride Festival in Washington, D.C., over the weekend in an extremely skimpy bodysuit that left nothing to the imagination. This is a 55-year-old woman who – I guess in an attempt to be empowered and show us how you can still be fierce over 50 – thinks it is really important that she show us her vagina. This is basically the same thing we saw from Halle Berry at the Met Gala when she wore that dress with alternating sheer and black-sequined stripes that showed off her side-pube.
And honestly, I’m legitimately asking: Why do they think that is important?
The Rise of Nudity
I think of somebody like Tina Turner, who had an incredible body. She never did this. She wore fun outfits that were saucy and showed off her incredible physique. And it was #Goals – even when Tina was in her sixties and seventies. But she was never running around showing off her vag.
This is a new thing where people like JLo, and Halle Berry, and Shakira, and Katy Perry are wearing very weird outfits that reveal too much. These women look fine, but they feel the need to over-sexualize themselves for some reason. The Bianca Censori nudity has caught on for women. Instead of being like, ‘Oh, she has no clothes on,’ they were like, ‘I guess we don’t wear clothes anymore. I won’t wear clothes either.’
Maybe, as my guest Miranda Devine said, they are holding onto the younger, more fertile versions of themselves. But for me, it is depressing. It is depressing because I really hope that – as I am in the second phase of life – I can feel, yes, sexy in my own body with my husband or on a trip. But I don’t feel the need to post sexpot photos of myself so that others can tell me how hot and sexy I am. I really think, at this point in my life, I’m past that. I know exactly who I am. I don’t need outside adoration to affirm it.
JLo’s Dilemma
I guess the problem for JLo is that her songs are terrible, and her music career is all but over. She made some good music in the early aughts, but she has reportedly been struggling to sell tickets to her recent tours. So, all she has is social media.
Even so, she is making herself look ridiculous and desperate. Had she just worn, literally, an additional inch of coverage on the left and the right, the story would be: She looks great. Instead, the story is: You seem to be a desperate ho wanting strangers to admire your vagina. That tells me you are incredibly insecure, small, petty, and don’t have a strong ID. You don’t know who you are.
The paparazzi document JLo’s every trip to Starbucks, every trip to the gym, every trip out for a burger because she is orchestrating all of it, because all she is is one big ball of PR.
When was the last time you saw Helen Mirren on camera doing something in her private life? Never, because she doesn’t call the paparazzi to photograph her. Let’s even go younger than Helen Mirren. Take Jennifer Lawrence. She is totally gorgeous. She is a big star. And you don’t see these photos of her all the time. She is not desperate to be a thirst trap. She does her thing on the big screen, and then she lets her work speak for itself.
JLo can’t do that because her work is poor, and it is not being well-received. So, she has to keep generating more controversial moments.
