In what has been dubbed a big, beautiful breakup, Elon Musk and Donald Trump are now engaged in a thermonuclear war of words that Megyn likened to Godzilla vs. King Kong.
The Musk-Trump bromance has seemingly imploded amid fallout from the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” working its way through Congress. After leaving the White House seven days ago on seemingly positive terms, Musk took to X earlier this week to slam the budget bill – which lacks electric vehicle subsidies – as “a mountain of disgusting pork” and “an abomination.”
On Thursday, Musk began reposting many of Trump’s decades-old tweets lambasting budget deficits and raising the debt ceiling limit, things the Big Beautiful Bill does. The president responded to the criticism from the Oval Office, saying he has had “a great relationship” with the Tesla founder and understands why he is upset. Even so, Trump suggested Musk is suffering acute Trump Derangement Syndrome upon leaving the administration.
As Tesla stock stumbled, Musk accused Trump of “ingratitude” on X, suggesting he won the 2024 election because of him. “Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,” Musk wrote.
The back-and-forth continued with Trump saying he had actually asked Musk to leave his government role because he “was wearing thin.” He also threatened to pull Musk’s government contracts. That led Musk to declare it was “time to drop the really big bomb” and accused Trump of being “in the Epstein files” and that is “the real reason they have not been made public.” He signed off with “Have a nice day, DJT!”
Musk then toyed with the idea of decommissioning his SpaceX Dragon spacecraft until a X user suggested he “cool down and don’t do this.” The billionaire obliged, and things appeared headed for a détente. Rumors swirled that Musk and Trump would speak over the phone Friday to put the whole thing to bed, but the president told multiple reporters he has no interest in having the conversation as he shrugged off the feud and said he is totally focused on policy.
