Megyn Shares the Important Life Advice She Got from Her Mom When She First Moved to New York City

On Friday’s show, Megyn and the hosts of Red Scare – Anna Khachiyan and Dasha Nekrasova – were discussing the upcoming Democratic mayoral primary in New York City.

Disgraced former governor Andrew Cuomo is polling in first place, but far-left New York State Rep. Zohran Mamdani is gaining steam thanks to endorsements from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and the Democratic Socialists of America. He is running on a platform of ‘free’ everything (e.g. food, bus service, etc.) and rent freezes for those in stabilized housing.

The progressive promises got Megyn thinking about her first apartment in NYC and a valuable lesson she learned from her mother in those early days. The advice is timeless, but, with graduation season upon us, it feels particularly timely. Megyn shares it below:

The Advice

“When I first moved to New York City in 1997, I was a very young lawyer. I found an apartment downtown in the Financial District. The apartment building was right next to Trinity Church, which is where Alexander Hamilton is buried. To give you an idea, it was close enough that I used to go to the World Trade Center to get my coffee and read the newspaper.

FiDi has turned into more of a neighborhood these days, but it was absolutely barren at the time. It was just a complete concrete jungle. I’ll never forget moving in there because it so stark and just cold.

I was 26 and it was one of those moments in life where you wonder what you’ve gotten yourself into. My electricity and phone line were supposed to be set up that first day, but no one showed up to do it. So, it was just me and my boxes in a dark apartment with cement all around me everywhere outside.

I walked to the nearby Millennium Hotel to call my mom on a pay phone, and I just started crying. I felt so scared and alone and was like, “What have I done? I don’t know if it’s a good idea.”

My mom was so great. She said, “You need to get some family pictures up on the wall. First thing tomorrow, you need to figure out where your grocery store is. Figure out where your dry cleaner is. Take a walk around the block. Familiarize yourself with your new neighborhood. Take a deep breath. And by the way, welcome to adulthood.”

It was such good and important advice.”
