As you may know, Doug and I have three kids ages 15, 14, and 11. We are thrilled that our two oldest children were confirmed in the Catholic Church Friday evening.
Our eldest was a year behind because we were asleep at the switch during COVID, but it ended up working out great because it meant Yates and Yardley got to go through the process together. They have been working so hard. Our church requires a lot of the confirmandi, and these kids did a lot over the past two years to earn this rite.
The Ceremony
I have to say I was surprised at how moved I was by the ceremony. I did not expect tears. But the bishop was there; the kids all had their white gowns on; the young girls’ hair was tied back with little white ribbons; and it all just spoke to something higher, and better, and purer than what you get from the world these days.
I liken it to when you are in a freezing cold, air conditioned church and then you walk outside and get hit in the face by the 90-degree weather on an August day. It was almost like that to go from a ceremony where you feel connected with God and hopeful about your children’s future and their relationship with him back into the news world where you see, for example, the OnlyFans influencer who slept with over 100 men in one day going on the Triggernometry podcast.
This is not to bash those guys because I love them, but this woman’s choices are deeply problematic for me. I don’t think she should be promoted. I think she should be, somehow, saved. I think we all need to be saved.
Stephen A. Smith asked me why woke-ism was able to rise. I told him I believe it is because we pushed religion out of the public square, and we had nothing left. People need something. It is no accident that most people on the right are not woke, and most people on the right are religious. People on the left are the ones who make up all the woke, and they have pushed God not just out of the public square but out of their lives entirely. They need more experiences like I had on Friday night, and they need less time online watching OnlyFans.
The Reminder
The thing I was reminded of – as I often am at church and church-related events – is that religion is not just the relationship with God. It is also this sort of scaffolding of relationships you develop with the people who are in your church or, in this case, the families who also had kids being confirmed and the sponsors who stepped in to support our children in this journey.
Our two sponsors are absolutely lovely people who pulled our kids aside privately and said, ‘Whatever you need – if you need somebody to talk to, if you need to ride home, if you need anything – we’ve got you.’ All this comes into their lives because of that relationship with God, the church, the week after week relationship of seeing the people.
All of that is so valuable and helps fill somebody up – a child, in particular – with great ingredients, as opposed to the darkness of some of these other things permeating our society today.
