Today I had Chris Moody and Jamie Weinstein, the host and producer of Finding Matt Drudge, on the show to talk about their new podcast, and it got me thinking about the first and only time I met the man himself.
When I was at Fox News, everyone would start their morning by reading Drudge Report. He has enormous power in conservative circles and beyond. When he puts the red siren at the top of the homepage, everyone in news is like, ‘Holy sh-t. Drudge has the siren up. We all have to pay attention.’ One day, he did that involving yours truly.
It was 2013. My youngest son Thatcher was born in July, and I had struck a deal with Roger Ailes to join the Fox News primetime lineup and take over the 9pm time slot when I returned from maternity leave.
This news was under lock and key. It was to be kept secret. I certainly was not going to blab it to anyone. I didn’t want to screw up my own career or cross my boss in that way.
I was online one day in the little townhouse we had when, boom, there was the news of my new show on Drudge Report. I remember thinking, How does he know? Because I knew, Roger knew, and almost nobody else knew. As you can see from the headline above, he had the full scoop and I never found out who gave it to him.
Not long after, I saw Matt Drudge in the greenroom outside of Sean Hannity’s studio at Fox. I think he was going on the show that night. And I said, ‘Matt Drudge, someday you’re going to have to tell me who told you that news.’ And he said, ‘I promise you, someday I will tell you.’
I haven’t seen him again since, and he didn’t tell me what the condition would be. Maybe it’s after the person dies. But he felt like he was in a position to actually, at some point, share the name with me. I would love to know. If he gets back to me, I’ll let you know.
It’s just another testament to the fact that he gets stuff no one else has.
