She’s got to shake it off.

Taylor Swift was a nominee at the 81st Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, and the pop star was not spared in host Jo Koy’s opening monologue. The comedian made a joke about Swift’s high-profile relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce that did not seem to sit well with her.

On Monday’s show, Megyn was joined by Daily Mail columnist Maureen Callahan to discuss Koy’s controversial quip and Swift’s reaction to it.

Bad Blood?

Swift attended the Golden Globes on Sunday night after her concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was nominated for the inaugural ‘cinematic and box office achievement’ award. The new category is designed to honor movies that dominate the box office, as Swift’s flick did. The film has grossed some $260 million worldwide to date.

While Barbie took home the statue, Swift made plenty of headlines of her own thanks to a joke that was made at her expense. During his opening monologue – which has been widely panned – Ko made a quip about the amount of airtime Swift receives during NFL games when she is on hand to support Kelce.

“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL,” Ko asked. “On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift.” At that point, the cameras panned to a stone-faced Swift as she took a sip of her drink.

Shake It Off

Anyone who has watched a Chiefs game this season knows how much the broadcast networks have enjoyed flashing Swift’s face on screen. And it’s apparently good for business. Ratings for the NFL have reportedly increased since she began showing up to watch the action.

While Megyn has pointed out that there is nothing Swift can do about the attention she receives, she does think the star could have handled the joke differently. “She’s not in charge of the number of times the NFL chooses to put her on cam – that’s not her fault,” Megyn said. “But can’t she just show that she’s a good sport… I think she made the wrong move.”

In fact, Megyn said it would have made more sense to react like she was in on the joke. “If I had been her advisor, I would have said you should laugh and maybe even do like a faceplant; something to communicate you get it, it’s been a bit much,” she explained. “That looked like, ‘How dare you question me and my popularity.’”

Callahan said the moment is reflective of what many people have come to find insufferable about awards shows. “This is what bothers people, this roomful of multimillionaires who are the most privileged and cannot take a swipe,” she concluded. “Taylor Swift is not above a minor little flyswatter here or there… you have to show a sense of humor and a sense of humility about yourself.”
