Prince Harry and Meghan Markle sent shockwaves through the royal world in March 2021 when they claimed during an interview with Oprah Winfrey that someone in the royal family speculated about the skin color of their son Archie prior to his birth.
The pair refused to name names at the time, saying it would be very “damaging” to the person. But the Dutch translation of a new book from the former royals’ close confidant apparently spilled the tea.
On Friday’s show, Megyn was joined by Daily Mail columnist Maureen Callahan to discuss the reveal and the radio silence from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the wake of it.
Naming Names
Late last month, royal commentator Omid Scobie’s latest book, Endgame, was pulled from shelves in the Netherlands after the translation allegedly named the two members of the royal family who Prince Harry and Meghan Markle accuse of speculating about their son Archie’s skin color.
When the couple first made the claims to Winfrey during their sit-down interview, Markle said there were “concerns and conversations” while she was pregnant with her first child about “how dark his skin might be when he’s born.” When Oprah asked if she would name names, Markle stayed mum. “I think that would be very damaging to them,” she said.
Scobie, who is known for his tight relationship with the former royals, claimed to know whom Markle was referring to but did not disclose it in Endgame because of libel laws in the United Kingdom. Curiously, the names of two senior royals somehow made it into the Dutch translation.
The translator told Daily Mail that “the names of the royals were there in black and white,” but Scobie has continued to deny it. As Callahan pointed out in a recent article, however, “you can’t mistranslate something that was never there.”
While Scobie made numerous TV appearances in the wake of the controversy claiming that he may one day reveal the identities of the so-called ‘racist royals,’ Piers Morgan decided to beat him to it.”The royals who were named in this book are King Charles and Catherine, Princess of Wales,” he said on the November 29 episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored.
Radio Silence
There has not been so much as a peep from Prince Harry and Markle since the ordeal, and both Megyn and Callahan agreed the silence is deafening. “[Scobie] is her chief spokesperson,” Megyn noted. This guy… [is] their stenographer, so the only reason he would know those names is from her, from them.”
Callahan said the behavior is characteristic of the pair. “You don’t have to be a detective to figure this out, as their lies become ever-less sophisticated and believable,” she said. “But I do think that they are pathologically, congenitally incapable of taking any sort of blame and of expressing any sort of remorse.”
In her view, there was a right way to handle this. “I mean, you want to get ahead of this,” Callahan said. “How about you deny that it’s Charles and Kate Middleton and say you’re sorry that this is happening, that these people don’t deserve this?”
Ultimately, Callahan thinks this could be the last straw for Prince Harry and Markle. “I kind of love though that is out of the bag now because I do think that was the last weapon in their arsenal,” she concluded. “This was the thing that they were holding over the royals, and they have nothing else.”
